A 15-year post evaluation of the fire effects on ant community in an area of Amazonian forest Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santos,Jean C.; Delabie,Jacques H. C.; Fernandes,G. Wilson.
Fire represents an important disturbance to ant communities in areas of fire regime. Otherwise, little is known about the effects of fire on ant communities in areas of non-fire regimes, such as in the Amazonian region. We evaluated the long-term effect of fire on ant species richness in a rain forest (Bacaba Plateau) burned 15-years ago and compare our data with the data of primary unburned forest. A total of 85 ant species distributed in 21 genera and 14 tribes were collected; among them, 72 and 44 species were found on the litter and vegetation, respectively. The fire damaged forest studied supports an intermediate richness of ants when compared to a primary unburned rain forest in the same region. A comparative analysis of ant species richness showed...

A community of flower-visiting bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) in the coastal sand dunes of northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Viana,Blandina Felipe; Kleinert,Astrid de Matos Peixoto.
We analyzed aspects of the community structure of Apoidea of a restricted area of dunes with restinga vegetation in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Standardized samples were taken for one year, 3 times a month from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A total of 3983 individuals (3770 females and 213 males) of 49 species, grouped into 13 morpho-functional types and belonging to five families, were collected from flowers in its majority. The fauna of Abaeté is composed by large solitary bees, best represented by Anthophoridae followed by Apidae; Halictidae; Megachilidae and Colletidae. Bees were active throughout the year, with peaks of abundance in periods of low rainfall. Daily activity was greatest between 08:00 and 14:00 hours, when relative humidity was lower and...

A comunidade de macroartrópodos edáficos em uma plantação de Coffea robusta Linden (Rubiaceae) e em uma floresta primária em Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brasil Zoologia
Pellens,Roseli; Garay,Irene.
The composition and structure of the edaphic macroarthropod community of these two sites were comparatively studied. The results obtained show that the total densities in the plantation of C. robusta can be higher than in the primary forest. Even though, contrarily to the observed in the forest, this community is characterized by the dominance of some non social groups and by the concentration of most of its individuals in the litter layers. As a consequence, the entire community is more susceptible to seasonal variations in density. Thus, these results emphasize the importance of the leaf litter in providing habitat, food as well as more stable microclimatic conditions for the macroarthropods community. For this reason it is importam to avoid any kind of...

A preliminary study of aquatic Coleoptera in temporary ponds and the ecological variables influencing their richness and diversity Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
GÓMEZ LUTZ,María C.; KEHR,Arturo I..
Water beetles possess a wide variety of ecological attributes that allow them to occupy a wide range of aquatic habitats. Temporary ponds are environments that experience recurrent drought periods that may differ in duration; each pond is further characterized by a particular fauna, and by the size of the population that can be supported. The richness (S) and diversity (H') of water beetles collected in temporary ponds in Corrientes province were analyzed. Rarefaction was used to avoid estimation bias and to use comparative methodology. Pearson correlations were calculated using water temperature, depth, surface (m²), diversity (Shannon & Wiener) and richness. A total of 660 individuals, including 42 species, 22 genera and 7 families were recorded....

Ants and their effects on an insect herbivore community associated with the inflorescences of Byrsonima crassifolia (Linnaeus) H.B.K. (Malpighiaceae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Fernandes,G. Wilson; Fagundes,Marcílio; Greco,Magda K. Barcelos; Barbeitos,Marcos Soares; Santos,Jean Carlos.
The effects of ants on the insect community on inflorescences of Byrsonima crassifolia (Malpighiaceae) were tested in an ant exclusion experiment in a cerrado vegetation in southeastern Brazil. Forty-four species of insects (23 families) and nine species of ants (6 genera and 3 subfamilies) were found on the inflorescences of B. crassifolia. The exclusion of ants, primarily Camponotus sericeiventris and Camponotus spp., reduced the treehopper population to 20% of the original abundance. Ant exclusion and time influenced the abundance of chewing (Exclusion, P<0.001; Time, P<0.002), and sucking insects (Exclusion, P<0.02; Time, P<0.01). Twice as many chewing and sucking insects were found on ant-excluded inflorescences as compared to control...

Arthropods associated with the crown of Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae) palm trees in three different environments from Brazilian Cerrado Neotropical Entomology
Gurgel-Gonçalves,Rodrigo; Palma,Alexandre R.T.; Motta,Paulo C.; Bar,Maria E.; Cuba,Cesar A.C..
Canopy arthropods, mainly from palm trees, are little known in the Brazilian Cerrado. In order to describe the arthropod community structure associated with the crown of Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae), we sampled 150 palm trees in six "veredas" of the Federal District, Brazil, in wild, rural and periurban areas in the rainy season. The arthropods within abandoned bird nests, mammal refuges, leaves and organic matter were manually collected, preserved in ethanol 70% and separated by order, family, morphospecies and feeding guilds. Stem height and diameter of the palm crowns were measured and leaves and bird nests were counted. We collected 3,862 arthropods, from 15 orders, 45 families and 135 morphospecies. The most abundant orders were Coleoptera (28.6%),...

Assessing Alternative Microscopy-Based Approaches to Species Abundance Description of Intertidal Diatom Communities ArchiMer
Ribeiro, Lourenço; Brotas, Vanda; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Jesus, Bruno; Barille, Laurent.
Diatoms usually dominate microphytobenthic biofilms in coastal and estuarine intertidal environments. Yet, functional studies on biofilms often skip species analysis because benthic diatoms are notoriously difficult to extract from sediments and challenging to identify at that taxonomic level. Valid, less time-consuming alternatives would surely be welcomed and increase the inclusion of community structure information in microphytobenthos (MPB) ecophysiological studies. Starting with an original 181-species abundances matrix (OSM), obtained during a 2-year spatial–temporal survey in a Tagus Estuary intertidal flat with contrasting sediment textures, the current study assessed the effectiveness of several approaches to species abundances analysis. The...

Benthic copepod communities associated with tubeworm and mussel aggregations on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer
Gollner, S; Zekely, J; Van Dover, C; Govenar, B; Le Bris, Nadine; Nemeschkal, H; Bright, M.
Variability in the structure of the meiobenthic copepod communities was studied among three vent sites on the East Pacific Rise. One of the sites was dominated by the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus, and the other two of the sites were dominated by the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila. In addition to the differences in the dominant megafauna, the maximum temperatures were much lower at the mussel-dominated sites, and the temperature to sulfide ratio was different between the tubeworm-dominated sites. A total of 22 vent endemic siphonostomatoid copepod species and 5 harpacticoid copepod species were identified among the three sites. Copepod abundance was low at all sites (< 1 - 31 ind. 10 cm(-2)). Species richness ranged from 6 - 14, Shannon-Wiener diversity...

During the European Commission's Framework Six Programme, HERMES, we investigated three main areas along the European margin, each characterized by the presence of seep-related structures exhibiting different intensity of activity and biological diversity. These areas are: (1) the Nordic margin with the Hakon Mosby mud volcano and many pockmarks, (2) the Gulf of Cadiz, and (3) the eastern Mediterranean with its hundreds of mud volcanoes and brine pool structures. One of the main goals of the HERMES project was to unravel the biodiversity associated with these seep-associated ecosystems, and to understand their driving forces and functions, using an integrated approach. Several multidisciplinary research cruises to these three areas provided evidence of...

Biomarker evidence of relatively stable community structure in the northern South China Sea during the last glacial and Holocene ArchiMer
He, Juan; Zhao, Meixun; Li, Li; Wang, Hui; Wang, Pinxian.
High-resolution molecular abundance records for several marine biomarkers during the last glacial and Holocene have been generated for core MD05-2904 (19 degrees 27.32'N, 116 degrees 15.15'E, 2066 in water depth) from the northern South China Sea. The U-37(K') SST record indicates a 4.4 degrees C cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum for this site, consistent with previous reconstructions. The contents Of C-37 alkenones, dinosterol, brassicasterol, and C-30 alkyl diols are used as productivity proxies for haptophytes, dinoflagellates, diatoms, and eustigmatophytes, respectively. These records reveal that both individual phytoplankton group and total productivity increased by several factors during the LGM compared with those for the Holocene, in response...

Bioremediation of fishpond effluent and production of microalgae for an oyster farm in an innovative recirculating integrated multi-trophic aquaculture system ArchiMer
Li, Meng; Callier, Myriam; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Galès, Amandine; Nahon, Sarah; Triplet, Sebastien; Geoffroy, Thibault; Menniti, Christophe; Fouilland, Eric; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle.
Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems are a promising solution for sustainable aquaculture combining nutrient recycling with increased biomass production. An innovative land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) was studied in France for a 60-day experiment. It combined a European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) RAS with two other production systems: high rate algal ponds (HRAP) with natural marine polyspecific algal assemblages, and oysters in separate open tanks. The objective was the assessment of: 1) the efficiency and the stability of the microalgae bioremediation of the effluent from a fish RAS in spring and summer, 2) the abundance and the diversity patterns of the microalgae biomass for consumption in the oyster compartment of...

ALVES,DOUGLAS F.R.; BARROS-ALVES,SAMARA P.; LIMA,DANIEL J.M.; COBO,VALTER J.; NEGREIROS-FRANSOZO,MARIA LUCIA.
The main goals of this investigation were to describe the community structure of anomuran and brachyuran crabs inhabiting reefs constituted by colonies of Schizoporella unicornis, and to provide a species importance ranking for this community. Collections were carried out on S. unicornis reefs at two-month intervals from May 2003 to May 2004, in the rocky sublittoral of the southeastern Brazilian coast. Relative abundance and occurrence were used to rank these species in the hierarchy importance. A total of 2,018 individuals were obtained, in 11 families, 22 genera and 31 species. Porcellanidae and Pilumnidae were the most abundant families, comprising respectively almost 60% and 15% of individuals sampled. The species ranking indicated four main groups A,...

Community structure across a large-scale ocean productivity gradient: Marine bird assemblages of the Southern Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Hyrenbach, K. David; Veit, Richard R.; Weimerskirch, Henri; Metzl, Nicolas; Hunt, George L., Jr..
Our objective was to understand how marine birds respond to oceanographic variability across the Southern Indian Ocean using data collected during an 16-day cruise (4-21 January 2003). We quantified concurrent water mass distributions, ocean productivity patterns, and seabird distributions across a heterogeneous pelagic ecosystem from subtropical to sub-Antarctic waters. We surveyed 5155 kin and sighted 15,606 birds from 51 species, and used these data to investigate how seabirds respond to spatial variability in the structure and productivity of the ocean. We addressed two spatial scales: the structure of seabird communities across macro-mega scale (1000 s km) biogeographic domains, and their coarse-scale (10 s km) aggregation at hydrographic and...

Community structure of microfitobenthos from the central coastal zone of Venezuela Boletín de Investigaciones
Pereira,Carlos; De Roa,Evelyn Zoppi; Montiel,Edie; Hernández,Vanessa; Castillo,Anyoelis.
ABSTRACT Microphytobenthos is a community that groups benthic photosynthetic microorganisms. In Venezuela and the other countries in the Caribbean Sea, this group has been scarcely studied, so its diversity is unknown. This study aims to describe the spatial and temporal variations of its composition and abundance in the central coastal zone of Venezuela. Samplings were conducted monthly from June 2014 to March 2015, in random stations at depths less than 20 m. Richness and abundance data were processed through multivariate hypothesis tests (Anosim - SIMPER - nMDS). A total of 327 species were identified, with a dominance of diatoms and dinoflagellates, without significant spatial and temporal variations. In terms of abundance, the most representative...

Composition and structure of aquatic insect assemblages of Yungas mountain cloud forest streams in NW Argentina Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Von Ellenrieder,Natalia.
Thirty three lotic environments in the Yungas mountain cloud forest of NW Argentina were sampled both in undisturbed forest areas and sites altered by human activities. Aquatic insects of 143 taxa in 55 families were collected. Cluster analysis suggested altitude as one of the main structuring variables of aquatic insect communities in these streams, and its importance was confirmed by non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS); the environmental parameters measured that were best correlated with the ordination were altitude, water temperature, latitude and channel variables (width, percentage of large and small woody debris, of undercut banks, cobble and coarse gravel). Multi response permutation procedures (MRPP) showed streams in well preserved areas to...
